When considering whether to have roller blinds or roman blinds installed, there are a few factors you’ll have to think about first:

  • What room do you want them installed in?
  • What do you want the blinds for? (full privacy, noise dampening, etc.)
  • What style are you going for?

Roller blinds and roman blinds both have their upsides and downsides. So, in this guide we’ll take you through the ins and outs of choosing the right blinds and the services we offer for blind installation.

What do Roman and Roller blinds do better?

Roman and roller blinds have specific advantages and disadvantages over each other when it comes to certain things. Click the dropdowns below to see which kind of blind is better at each:

Roller Blinds are generally better when it comes to completely blacking out a room.

It is worth knowing that Roman blinds can offer a bit more light control, as you don’t need to open them as much to get a decent level of light. But if you’re looking to black out a room entirely, roller blinds will be the better choice.

Roman Blinds are generally better at maintaining heat due to usually being made of thicker materials and layered materials that trap air. This helps keep your room warmer.

But we also offer many thermal and solar-reflective options for roller blinds too that also help maintain heat in your home.

Roman Blinds are also usually better for noise insulation. They’re generally made of thicker materials while also creating trapped pockets of air that create a sound barrier between the blind and window.

Draw: If you need privacy during the day, roller and roman blinds are essentially as good as each other. During the night when lights are on it depends more on the material than whether it’s a roller or roman blind.

Roman blinds are a bit better at concealing the inside of a room when partly opened than roller blinds. This is because of the way the folds stack, meaning you don’t need to open the blinds as much to get a bit of light in.

Roller blinds generally need to be opened more and don’t conceal nearly as much when opened.

On top of this, you’ll have to keep in mind the style you’re going for. We’d say roller blinds are a more flexible choice for most styles, while roman blinds offer a classic, elegant look to fit cozy living rooms, conservatories or dining rooms.

We have a beautiful range of plain, textured and patterned fabrics suitable for any room. There are also now a wide range of fabrics available with blackout backings, these are ideal for bedrooms. We have children’s designs including dinosaurs and unicorns, and luxurious shot silk, and chenille fabrics for an adult’s room.

Roman blinds installed in a recess can help block as much light as possible

Maintaining and fitting Roller and Roman blinds

Things to know before we install your blinds

Before deciding on which blind you’re going to buy you’ll first need to know where you’re going to have it installed. If you don’t know, the recess is the space between the glass and the inside wall. Recesses can vary in shape and size, there’s no one size-fits-all.

Generally, if you’re looking to have curtains installed as well as the blind or want to ensure as much light is blocked out as possible, we’d recommend fitting the blind inside the recess.

Roller blinds are usually better for blocking as much light as possible. But you can even combine the two. Say you’ve got a particularly bright streetlight outside but don’t want to compromise on the style of a roman blind. We can install a roller blind on the inside recess to block the light that won’t be visible once rolled up.

Are Roman or Roller Blinds easier to maintain?

The main difference in terms of maintenance between the two types of blinds is that roller blinds are much easier to clean. Roman blinds can accumulate a lot of dust in their folds, whereas with roller blinds it’s just a case of wiping them down.

Roller blinds also have a simpler mechanism, meaning there are fewer things to break. And humidity can be an issue for roman blinds due to a buildup of mildew on the fabric, while this is rarely an issue with roller blinds.

So, between the two, roller blinds are easier to maintain. Roman blinds are an investment, but you may find the added style worth the trade-off.

In the end, your choice will come down to what you prefer. If you feel like you’re ready to decide, book an appointment here or call us at 01603 334 085 to get started.
